Examples:

Machine Project:

Gets lots of people volunteering to help. Also sends out an email once of twice a year looking for more volunteers. Gets interns from colleges in the area (CalArts, Pomona).

Maintaining volunteers dependent on how many hours they week -- at Machine, usually ask people to work once a week. Some people work out great, other not so much. Primarily dependent on how good they are at figuring out for themselves what to do.

Betalevel:

Events are produced by ad hoc groups comprised of the Betalevel organizers and additional volunteers working on the specific event. Betalevel doesn't get many open-ended offers of help -- it's already run by 8 people, and the space presents itself as more of a clubhouse. Lack of street and mailing address makes filling out official intern paperwork somewhat problematic.

C-level:

Was run with 6-12 organizers, with an ad hoc workgroup system for independent events similar to Betalevel. For spectacle events, there could be very large groups of volunteers, mostly dedicated to that project. Unlike Betalevel, all volunteers were working with/under the "c-level" umbrella.
